The Last Stand of the French

While the British troops at Dunkirk were undergoing the evacuation, their French comrades were performing an even less glamorous and more hopeless task. In an effort to keep the Germans from breaking the shaky defensive line surrounding Dunkirk, several French troops boldly stayed behind in order to defend their retreating allies and keep the evacuation going as long as possible. It was their efforts, combined with the aid of the British civilian boats and the RAF, that helped get so many troops to freedom. Their sacrifice paid the price for the salvation of so many of the BEF, not to mention the additional several thousand French and Belgian troops who managed to escape as well.
